I hope that you are all enjoying your summer holidays and actually taking a bit of a rest. I managed to take 10 days off during my wedding, but we haven't had much time to take off anything else. But I'm really glad that we had that 10 days because, honestly, I hadn't taken a proper holiday for such a long time. In fact, the last time I properly took a vacation I was working for someone else and I was ridiculed for it. I've never been in this situation before in Web3, where you feel like you just can't take time off. But now I know that was a huge red flag. In fact, I knew that at the time. I just ignored it because I was living in fear of my job and getting fired if I didn't hold the line. So since then I haven't really took any time off because I've been building my business, I've been launching the podcast, so it was very nice to have the 10 days of nothing. I didn't open the laptop once. I actually deleted all of my work apps. So LinkedIn, twitter I mean I don't use Twitter that much but Gmail I literally deleted everything because I knew that my brain is wired to go and do stuff and everybody's brain is wired this way. But if you've been on autopilot for a while and sometimes I find myself slipping into just clicking on LinkedIn on the app and scrolling through and I catch myself and I'm like what are you doing, emily? Get off LinkedIn. It's past 6 pm. So, yeah, I knew that I might do that if I did not delete it, so I did.

Speaker 1:

Anyway, I hope that you've all managed to have a bit of time off, and this episode is really very much focused on tips to take a real break, and this is me learning from my last 10 days and also from supporting my clients to actually take in a break and not feeling guilty for it. I was actually speaking to Nia Foundation recently and they do this really cool thing called Wellness Weeks. They do it twice a year and Mary mentioned it on our podcast together, if you scroll back to when she was on, and she talks about these two mandatory holidays, these two weeks, and I think that's an incredible idea to get started. But here are my tips on how to take a real break so you don't feel guilty when you're on vacation, so you don't constantly check your phone, so you don't worry that your job's going to still be there at the end of it. So step number one is block off real time. Okay, not one day, here and there, take a few days out. And the reason I say this is because, if you are taking just like one or two days off, you find that you're just doing life tasks, so you're going to the grocery store, you're paying the bills, cleaning the house that you don't actually take time off. So take real time, like I would say, take a week off if you can. And whilst you do that, step two, let's merge these Plan to be in the nature and refuel. I don't know if English people say that anymore. You know, honestly, my husband's French, antoine is French, so I speak in like English French. Anyway, plan to be in the nature and refuel.

Speaker 1:

What you find, after you take this few days off in a row, that your brain starts to unlock a bit. I have many clients who come to me I'm friends and also my own experience who say Emily, I'm doing all this stuff, I'm learning so much, but I can't get anything done. It's like my brain's not working. And this is a good sign that you need to take time out from doing anything and like, literally allow yourself to get bored, go in nature, be inspired, because you know that when it's full and it's not really working, you've got to empty it. And this is one way to empty your brain, reduce that capacity, so it can start to get creative and think and be inspired by all the small things. And it'll be crazy how many things, like unlocking your head during that time, like when I was in my 10 days off during the wedding, I had so many ideas about podcast episodes, social media posts, plans, revenue streams. I literally pulled together my new group coaching that's full now, which is crazy in my head during this time. It all came together, the whole program, and I managed to get it down and I wrote it down and I left it and I just put it on my desk and I came to it on the Monday that I came back to work. So you'll find that you get all this inspiration and if you're feeling particularly stuck right now or you're paralyzed in like procrastination, as much as it sounds weird, doing less is going to help you to unlock that productivity.

Speaker 1:

Okay, so we merged one and two but three tell people that you will be off and that you won't reply. Okay, this is very simple, but nobody does this. You need to tell the people that you're working with your clients, your vendors, your partners, your employees, your team, your founding team, whoever it is that you need to like tell. Tell them that you will not reply and to expect a reply at x date, okay, because if you don't do that, you'll get people messaging you and then you'll be very prone to reading the text and saying, oh, it's okay, I'll just reply to this one. Then you've destroyed your boundaries. Okay, so set the boundaries from day one. I am going to be off and will not reply to you until this date.

Speaker 1:

Great step four delete all your apps. I'm talking Telegram, I'm talking Slack, I'm talking I don't know what else. Linkedin notifications delete them all and turn off all the notifications. If you can't delete them, you cannot bring yourself to do it. Turn off all notifications and don't let your bloody thumb click on them. All right, because the worst thing you can do is end up in a desk scroll on LinkedIn, start Comparisonitis, read your DMs and then start reply. You've literally undone step one to three by doing that. Okay, so delete everything.

Speaker 1:

I actually did this with one of my clients. I remember it was my first ever client back in. I think it was even one of my earliest clients last year, 2022. She'd come from the podcast, actually, which is very cool, hi, trisha, shouting you out now. I got her to delete Discord. That was where they were communicating the most at work. I got her to delete Discord and turn off the notifications for Telegram and she was like I literally feel lighter. So do that.

Speaker 1:

Then, number five after you've done all these steps, set an old school out of office If you still use email, because, honestly, so many web through companies don't even know what email is. Set an out of office. Hey, I'm not going to be here on this date, but I will be back on this date, okay, very simple. Number six schedule all of your social media posts, record all the podcasts. So that's what I did. I recorded like six podcasts or something. I don't know. Alex. Alex, my editor is like I don't know, emily, if you actually recorded that much at once. But okay, I recorded a lot of podcasts and I wrote all my newsletters and I wrote all my social media and I scheduled everything. Then I didn't have to think about it. Then I knew that the algorithm was not going to go against me, that LinkedIn was not going to delete me off the face of the earth and that people could still listen to my podcast, still get all the insights from my newsletters and that didn't have to worry about a thing. Okay, so get all that off your plate. Schedule timing to do it.

Speaker 1:

Then number seven is if you need to create a guide for anyone covering you so they don't need to bother, you, get it done before. Okay, so this might be like if I'm not here, this newsletter needs to go out. You need to make sure that it's edited by this person, or it might be. This partnership is coming up Like. This is something that we've been working on for like three months. Here's the partnership information. We need to send a press release out, right, whatever it may be that has to come up that you should be doing.

Speaker 1:

Hand it over to someone else and give them a step-by-step guide. Give them all the information, all the links, all the contacts that they could ever possibly need, and tell anybody that's working with them that they have a guide, and to go to them if they need them. And leave it there, right, you don't need to check in, you can just give them everything, and unless it's urgent, like I would say, literally, there's a fire that needs to be put out and it's terrible and nobody else can deal with it apart from you which, by the way, should not be the case. If you've built out boundaries, if nothing is urgent, this guide will suffice and you know that you've put in the work so somebody else can step in when you're not there. Okay, so I was going to give you number eight, but it's kind of the same for founders. But founders, if there's something that like I know what it's like when you have a small business it's not like having a team. But if you really feel like you cannot hand over the keys, or if you literally don't have anybody to hand over to, or if you have contractors or you have a VA or something, just follow the same steps Honestly, give someone notice that you're going to be away and tell them unless something's on fire or something is completely out of control, that's gone crazy, that it has to wait.

Speaker 1:

This is non-negotiable, and the only thing that's stopping you from doing that is your own beliefs that you cannot, cannot trust somebody to do this. So, before you do go around and tell people that you're going away, consider what are my beliefs around me going away. What do I think is actually going to happen? Do I trust these people? What if I don't? Why don't I trust these people? Right, do a bit of reflection on that, because, as a solar printer or as a single or a co-founder, I know how hard it is. It's literally your blood is in this business. You feel like you can't leave it, but you can. Okay, if I can do it, so can you. I was like an ex 24-7 worker. Right, I used to constantly work. I managed to step away, create boundaries and reflect on why I was doing things. If I can do it, so can you.

Speaker 1:

So, with all these steps, what will you feel? Okay, so you are blocking off time. You're going out in nature, you're telling people you'll be off and that you won't reply. You're going to delete all of your apps. You're going to go old school and set an out of office. You're going to schedule all of the social if you need to. You're going to record all the podcasts, the content, the newsletters, all of that stuff. You're going to create a mini guide to anyone who's going to cover for you, so they don't have to bother you, so that nothing, unless it's absolutely life-threatening urgent, is going to seep through and then, if you're a founder or if you have a small business, you're going to tell your team and your partners that you're off and, unless everything is actually on fire and out of control, that it can wait. And if you're struggling to do that, I challenge you to ask those questions that I just mentioned.

Speaker 1:

So, yeah, you might feel a bit anxious, but give it a few days. The peace waves in your mind opens, the space is created. You'll have seriously so many ideas and plans. You'll feel like you've created this little bubble of inspiration. Try it, I promise you it will happen. You've got to keep it going. You've got to give it time. It's a bit like meditation.

Some people are like I think so much I can't even meditate. Like all these thoughts keep coming in. That's normal, it's fine. You aren't sitting long enough. You are not taking enough time. The more time you take, the less thoughts will come in, believe me. And it's just like taking time off. The more time you take off, the more time you give yourself. The more space you give yourself, the more your brain unlocks and the bigger capacity you have and you end up performing better. You end up working in a less chaotic manner, you respond to things better, you deal with difficult personalities better. This space is so important. Okay, so that was ways to take a real break.
